Good news! SFL Studnets Win Global Runner-up in the Asia-Pacific International Commercial Arbitration Moot
The 25th Asia-Pacific International Commercial Arbitration Moot Global Finals recently concluded successfully in Sabah, Malaysia.
Mao Luxuan and Qiu Ziyan, two students from the School of Foreign Languages, participated in the competition.
After intense competition among over 150 top university teams from around the world,
the team from Shanghai Jiao Tong University ultimately won the runner-up.
On March 25, 2025, the global finals of the Asia-Pacific International Commercial Arbitration Moot (APAC Moot) concluded successfully in Kota Kinabalu, the capital of Sabah, Malaysia. Among the fierce competition of over 150 top university teams from around the world, students Mao Luxuan and Qiu Ziyang from the 2023 undergraduate class of the School of Foreign Languages, with their outstanding performance in the court debate, were honored with the global runner-up title.
This is the first time that Shanghai Jiao Tong University has won an award in this top international event, and also marks a historic breakthrough for Chinese teams!
From February 15th to 18th, 2025, in the online round-robin competition of the Asia-Pacific International Commercial Arbitration Moot (APAC Moot), the team from the School of Foreign Languages of Shanghai Jiao Tong University stood out from over 150 top university teams from around the world, and advanced to the global finals with an outstanding total score of eighth place.
From March 22nd to 25th, the elimination round was held offline at the Borneo International Centre for Arbitration and Mediation in Sabah, Malaysia. The Shanghai Jiao Tong University team sent Mao Luxuan from the German Department and Qiu Ziyang from the English Department to compete in Malaysia.

The duo courtroom debate team performed outstandingly on the field. Firstly, they advanced to the top 16 in the competition against Maharashtra National Law University, Nagpur, and then defeated traditional powerhouses such as the Russian National Research University Higher School of Economic. They became the only Chinese team on the field after winning the quarterfinal against the National Law University, Jodhpur of India. In the semifinal against the Moscow State Institute of International Relations, they won high praise from the arbitration tribunal with their meticulous argumentation logic and excellent courtroom performance, successfully securing a place in the final.

On March 25th at the finals, facing the strong challenge from Symbiosis Law School, Hyderabad of India, the two debaters remained calm and composed, citing evidence precisely. After more than one hour of intense debate, they narrowly missed out on the championship and won the global runner-up. This not only set a new record for Shanghai Jiao Tong University in this event, but also marked a leap for Chinese teams from the top eight in history to the world runner-up .
