The Graduate Public English Teaching Center Empowers Graduate Students' Academic English Writing with AI
With the rapid development of information technology, digital teaching has become an important trend. The Graduate Public English Teaching Center actively embraced emerging technologies and fully utilized AI tools to build bridges for students' academic English writing. A series of remarkable results has been achieved, setting a model for the innovative development of academic English teaching. The following will elaborate on the AI-empowered academic English writing teaching for postgraduates from four aspects: work review, teacher feedback, student feedback, and future planning.
Work Review
As early as the 2022-2023 academic year, the Graduate Public English Teaching Center and its teaching team keenly perceived the potential of large language models in artificial intelligence and took the lead in introducing AI tools in the lesson preparation to generate courseware and practice questions. Some teachers also applied for teaching research projects to pilot the use of general AI tools for writing revision and polishing in their classes. In May 2023, the teaching center established the "AI Empowering Academic English Writing Teaching Research" project team and promoted the use of existing large language platforms to assist academic English writing among all students.
Teacher Feedback
After the full implementation of the "AI-empowered Writing Task", teachers generally believed that students made significant progress in language expression, structural arrangement, and content depth. However, the degree of progress varied among different students. Students with relatively weak foundations made greater improvements in grammar and sentence structure, while those with stronger abilities needed advanced guidance. It was found that students' confidence and language complexity increased when writing without the assistance of AI tools, showing the positive supplementary role of AI tasks in classroom teaching. Teachers also became more proficient in using multiple AI tools, benefiting a lot in lesson preparation and teaching. In addition, by combining detailed scoring criteria, AI-empowered writing tasks reduced repetitive error correction work such as grammar checking, initial feedback on vocabulary and sentence structures, and enhanced the targeted feedback.
Optimitistic in the application of AI tools in future writing teaching, teachers believed that the reasonable use of AI can have a long-term positive impact on students' writing abilities. In the future, the functions of AI tools can be further expanded to areas such as academic journal paper writing, oral training, and speech assistance, to comprehensively enhance students' language and thinking abilities. At the same time, it was suggested that the advantages of AI should be integrated into the cultivation of traditional writing skills by combining the concept of "AI + HI" (artificial intelligence and human intelligence), so that students can not only master AI tools but also improve their core writing skills and independent thinking abilities.
Student Feedback
A survey of master's students (including those in direct doctoral programs and master's programs) taking the compulsory Academic English course in the fall of 2024 revealed that student feedback highlights three major technical values: AI-assisted writing has significantly boosted students' confidence in English writing. The average self-satisfaction score for Report writing completed in a closed-book classroom setting was 4.45 out of 10, while the average score for Reports revised with AI tools and resubmitted soared to 7.69, indicating a very high level of student acceptance of using AI tools to assist in English writing. The proportion of students with a confidence index of ≥6 increased from 10.72% to 66.14%, indicating that their writing anxiety was greatly alleviated. Students also highly recognized the supportive function of AI language correction tools, with an average satisfaction score of 8.07. Students believed that AI tools proved most helpful in correcting grammar errors (81.36%), enhancing logical fluency (65.09%), and increasing vocabulary (59.32%). They also played a certain role in adjusting tone (32.55%) and providing style suggestions (32.28%). These tools can help students quickly identify writing problems, receive targeted feedback, and promote self-learning.
At the same time, after using the AI to generate content, students would further apply critical thinking to evaluate it, analyze logical flaws and the sufficiency of evidence, and develop independent judgment capabilities.
Future plans
The future development space is mainly reflected in the following three aspects:
In terms of technology application, the teaching center will further explore the deep integration of AI tools with teaching. In terms of teaching practice, the teaching center will continue to center on students' growth and development, and constantly improve teaching methods. In terms of teaching evaluation, the teaching center will further improve the writing assessment system based on AI technology.
Currently, the Teaching Center was conducting a pilot study on "AI Empowered Academic English Oral Practice". By leveraging AI technologies such as speech recognition and intelligent dialogue, it provided students with real-time pronunciation correction and suggestions for optimizing oral expression, created authentic language communication scenarios, enhanced students' oral expression skills and practical application abilities, and built a comprehensive academic English learning support system for students.
In the future, the Graduate Public English Teaching Center will continue to adhere to the concept of "technology as the oar and education as the core", constantly promoting the continuous innovation of education and teaching, exploring the infinite possibilities of the integration of AI and education, comprehensively cultivating the global competence of postgraduates in an academic context, further efficiently enhancing their academic English communication skills such as listening, speaking, reading and writing, improving students' academic literacy, and helping them engage in international academic exchanges with greater confidence and composure. We will spare no effort to cultivate high-quality talents with a global vision, outstanding academic ability, and the ability to tell China's academic stories well in the international academic community.
