From December 20 to 22, 2024, the Seminar on the Development of Foreign Language Disciplines of Shanghai Jiao Tong University and the Forum of Editors-in-Chief of Foreign Language and Literature Journals were held in the School of Foreign Languages. More than thirty editors-in-chief of several domestic foreign language and literature journals were invited to conduct in-depth discussions on the future development direction of foreign language disciplines , academic creativity and innovation, and the mission of academic journals in the era of artificial intelligence. The conference was hosted by the School of Foreign Languages of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and co-organized by the Editorial Office of Contemporary Foreign Language Studies, the Department of Liberal Arts Construction of Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Shanghai Jiao Tong University Press.

 

On the morning of the 21st, the conference officially kicked off. Yang Mingming, professor of the School of Foreign Languages of SJTU, presided over the opening ceremony.

 

Professor Shang Biwu, Dean of the School of Foreign Languages of SJTU, delivered an opening speech, pointing out that the discipline of foreign languages should face up to the national strategy and social needs, deepen reform and innovation, and contribute wisdom and strength to promote the exchange and mutual understanding of human civilization, build a community of shared future for mankind, and realize the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.

 

After the opening ceremony, the conference entered the keynote report session. Prof. Zhu Yifan, Deputy Director of the International Affairs Division and Deputy Director of the Office for Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan of SJTU, hosted the first two keynote reports.

 

Prof. Wang Wenbin, editor-in-chief of Foreign Language Teaching and Research, gave a keynote speech entitled “We need to plan future-oriented foreign language education”, emphasizing that with a vision for the future we should cultivate foreign language talents who have knowledge, imagination, innovation, creativity, and international communication power for the country.

 

Prof. Yang Jincai, editor-in-chief of Contemporary Foreign Literature, gave a keynote speech entitled “Theoretical Reflection and Innovation of Contemporary Foreign Literature Research”, exploring the discourse construction of Chinese foreign literature research in light of its current situation.

 

The next two keynote speeches were hosted by Prof. Zhang Li from the School of Foreign Languages of Shanghai Jiao Tong University. 

The keynote speech of Prof. Yang Feng, editor-in-chief of Contemporary Foreign Languages, was entitled “Interaction between Foreign Language Journals, Foreign Language Disciplines and Foreign Language Scholars”, which emphasized that journals, as a bridge between authors and readers, can promote the construction and development of academic communities.

 

Prof. Ran Yongping, editor-in-chief of Modern Foreign Languages, gave a keynote speech entitled “The Development of Linguistics in China from the Perspective of International Frontier Trends”, which emphasized that Chinese linguistics should pay attention to the use of language in the context of society and culture, and go beyond the internal study of language to a broader social level.

 

The next two keynote speeches were hosted by Prof. Ding Hongwei of the School of Foreign Languages, Shanghai Jiao Tong University.

 

Prof. Zhu Keyi, editor-in-chief of Contemporary Rhetoric, gave a keynote speech on the topic of “Intersubjectivity of Academic Communities”, emphasizing upon the communication and interaction among academic communities, and their joint construction, inheritance and development.

 

Prof. Yang Ping, editor-in-chief of China Translation, gave a keynote speech entitled “Knowledge and Thoughts on Translation Research and Discipline Construction under the New Situation”, analyzing the new situation of translation research and discipline construction.

 

The next two keynote speeches were hosted by Prof. Zhen Fengchao from the School of Foreign Languages, Shanghai Jiao Tong University.

 

Prof. Yuan Xiaoyi, editor-in-chief of Theory and Practice of Foreign Language Teaching, gave a keynote speech entitled “Translation Discipline Construction in the Era of Artificial Intelligence”, discussing the new requirements of the development of artificial intelligence in the cultivation of translation professionals.

 

Prof. Hu Fanzhu, editor-in-chief of Research on Culture and Art, gave a keynote speech entitled “Goals, Problems, Methods: Some Reflections on Regional Country Studies”, in which he believed that regional country studies should have corresponding ideological, historical and problem consciousness.

 

In the afternoon of the 21st, the Editor-in-Chief's Roundtable Forum centered on the construction of China's independent knowledge system and the contention of academic journals.

 

The first session was hosted by Prof. Wu Shiyu from School of Foreign Languages, Shanghai Jiao Tong University.

 

Prof. Chen Yong, editor-in-chief of Foreign Language Guide, Prof. Ge Guilu, editor-in-chief of Foreign Languages and Literatures, Prof. Hu Fanzhu, editor-in-chief of Culture and Arts Research, Prof. Ji Xiuming, editor-in-chief of Language Education, Prof. Li Dejun, editor-in-chief of Foreign Languages Research, and Prof. Li Jianbo, executive deputy editor-in-chief of Journal of Zhejiang Institute of Foreign Languages, participated in the discussion.

 

The second session of the Editor-in-Chief Roundtable Forum was moderated by Pang Shuangzi, tenured associate professor of the School of Foreign Languages, Shanghai Jiao Tong University.

 

Prof. Long Dan, deputy editor-in-chief of Foreign Languages, Prof. Qin Yilong, executive deputy editor-in-chief of Journal of Social Sciences of Jilin University, Prof. Ran Yongping, editor-in-chief of Modern Foreign Languages, Prof. Song Binghui, editor-in-chief of Comparative Literature in China, Prof. Sun Ying, executive editor of Journal of Foreign Languages, and Prof. Wang Wenbin, editor-in-chief of Foreign Language Teaching and Research, participated in the discussion.

 

The third session of the Editor-in-Chief Roundtable Forum was hosted by Wang Yuxia, Associate Professor of School of Foreign Languages, Shanghai Jiao Tong University.

 

Prof. Yang Feng, editor-in-chief of Contemporary Foreign Language Studies, Associate Prof. Yang Bin, associate editor of Shandong Foreign Language Teaching, Prof. Yang Jincai, editor-in-chief of Contemporary Foreign Literature, Prof. Yang Ping, editor-in-chief of Translation in China, and Prof. Yin Feizhou, head of Foreign Languages and Cultures, participated in the discussion.

 

The fourth session of the Editor-in-Chief Roundtable Forum was hosted by Yu Jing, tenured Associate Professor of School of Foreign Languages, Shanghai Jiao Tong University.

 

Associate Professor Yuan Limei, Editorial Director of Shanghai Translation, Professor Yuan Xiaoyi, Editor-in-Chief of Theory and Practice of Foreign Language Teaching, Professor Zeng Jun, Editor-in-Chief of Journal of Shanghai University (Philosophy and Social Science Edition), Professor Zeng Wei, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Journal of Central China Normal University, Professor Zhou Hejun, Editor-in-Chief of Journal of Tianjin Foreign Studies University, and Professor Zhu Keyi, Editor-in-Chief of Contemporary Rhetoric, participated in the discussion.

 

On the morning of the 22nd, Prof. Liu Huawen from the School of Foreign Languages of Shanghai Jiao Tong University hosted the first two keynote reports.

 

Prof. Li Jianbo, Executive Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Journal of Zhejiang Institute of Foreign Languages, gave a keynote speech titled “An Initial Exploration of the Curriculum of Country and Regional Studies in Foreign Language Disciplines”, in which he discussed the key points and difficulties in the curriculum of country and regional studies.

 

Prof. Song Binghui, editor-in-chief of Comparative Literature in China, gave a keynote speech titled “Disciplinary Positioning and Development of Comparative Literature and Intercultural Studies”, pointing out that comparative literature, as a border-crossing discipline, is characterized by its cross-cultural, cross-linguistic, transnational, transdisciplinary, and cross-media research perspectives.

 

The next two keynote speeches were hosted by Prof. Wu Fuyun from the School of Foreign Languages, Shanghai Jiao Tong University.

 

Prof. Zhen Fengchao of Shanghai Jiao Tong University gave a keynote speech titled “Predicament and Breakthrough of Corpus Linguistics in the Age of AI”, discussing the future development direction of corpus linguistics in the age of AI from the three dimensions of knowledge, predicament and breakthrough.

 

The keynote report by Prof. Zhou Hejun, editor-in-chief of Journal of Tianjin Foreign Studies University, pointed out that conducting original research is an important path for foreign language disciplines to construct China's independent knowledge theory system.

 

The next two keynote speeches were hosted by Prof. Wei Xiaofei from the School of Foreign Languages, Shanghai Jiao Tong University.

 

Prof. Li Dejun, editor-in-chief of Foreign Language Studies, analyzed the differences between humanities and social sciences discourse and scientific discourse from the three dimensions of the meaning of language, the meaning of the author and the meaning of the interpreter, in his keynote speech titled “Factuality and Interpretation: Talking about the Orientation of Intelligent Computing of Humanities Knowledge”.

 

Professor Ge Guilu, editor-in-chief of Foreign Languages and Literatures, gave a keynote speech titled “Civilization Mutual Learning, Concepts and Innovative Development Paths of Foreign Language Disciplines”, pointing out that foreign language disciplines should be based on the general framework of the development of higher education of China as a superpower and take the initiative to serve the new needs of the country's soft power enhancement and cultural prosperity and development.

 

The last two keynote speeches of the conference were hosted by Tang Yili, tenured Associate Professor of School of Foreign Languages, Shanghai Jiao Tong University.

 

Prof. Zeng Wei, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Journal of Central China Normal University, made a keynote report titled “Criticism of AI Literature and Imagination Cultivation of Foreign Language Talents”, pointing out that the cultivation of foreign language talents should pay more attention to imagination in order to show the new humanistic spirit in the age of science and technology.

 

The keynote speech of Prof. Huan Changpeng of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, entitled “Reform and Exploration of Undergraduate Talent Cultivation Mode of Language Data Science for Foreign Language Majors”, shared the reform practice of undergraduate talent cultivation in the School of Foreign Languages of Shanghai Jiao Tong University.

 

Prof. Liu Jianjun, Distinguished Professor of School of Foreign Languages, SJTU, delivered the closing speech. Prof. Liu Jianjun reviewed the main content of the keynote speech and emphasized that the discipline of foreign languages, as a discipline in China, was closely related to the destiny of the country and the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation. In view of the mission of the era, that is, mutual learning of civilization, the cultivation of foreign language talents should focus on the ability to apply knowledge and wisdom. Academic journals should maintain the original intention of serving academics, adapt to new technologies rapidly and form new relationships. Under the background of artificial intelligence, foreign language education should establish a human-machine complicity relationship and transform to relational subjectivism.

 

2024 Seminar on the Development of Foreign Language Disciplines of Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Forum for Editors-in-Chief of Foreign Language and Literature Journals, was a complete success.
