Symposium on the History of Translation and Interlingual Practices of Chinese and Western Concepts Held

On June 1, 2024, the Symposium on Translation History and Interlingual Practice of Chinese and Western Concepts was successfully held at the School of Foreign Languages of Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Experts and scholars who made significant achievements in the fields of translation history, conceptual history and translation studies were invited to discuss the path of interdisciplinary research on translation and history.

The symposium was hosted by the School of Foreign Languages of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, organized by the Center for Translation and Intercultural Studies of the School of Foreign Languages of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and co-organized by the editorial office of China Translation and the Journal of Foreign Languages and Their Teaching.Wang Hongzhi, Professor Emeritus and Research Professor of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Fang Weigui, Distinguished Professor of the Institute for Advanced Studies in Humanities and Social Sciences of Chongqing University, Sun Jiang, Professor of the Xueheng Research Institute of Nanjing University, Yang Ping, Vice President of the China Academy of Translation, Ren Dongsheng, Professor of the School of Foreign Languages of Ocean University of China, Hu Cuie, Professor of the Department of Translation of the School of Foreign Languages of Nankai University, and Zhu Yifan, Professor of the School of Foreign Languages of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, delivered keynote speeches. 

 


Mr. Shang Biwu, Vice Dean of the School of Foreign Languages of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, attended the opening ceremony and delivered a speech. In his opening speech, Mr. Shang Biwu expressed his warm welcome to the participating experts and scholars, and made a brief introduction of the discipline characteristics, talent cultivation and scientific research of the School of Foreign Languages. He said that the translation discipline of the School of Foreign Languages of Shanghai Jiao Tong University had good foundation in corpus translation research, and was expected to make new achievements in the study of conceptual translation history.

 

A total of six keynote speeches were delivered.  Mr. Wang Hongzhi made a presentation on "Translation Issues of the Morrisonian and Amestrian Missions".


Fang Weigui presented "Is it 'Poetry' or 'Literature'? ------The Conceptual History Behind Mistranslation".


Mr. Sun Jiang made a presentation entitled "Fraternité: Philanthropism or Affection------A Cross-cultural Conceptual History".


Ms. Yang Ping, Mr. Wang Hongzhi, Mr. Fang Weijie, and Mr. Sun Jiang had a talk on "Interdisciplinary Research on Translation and History".

 

Prof. Ren Dongsheng made a presentation on "Identification and Analysis of the Concept of 'National Translation'".


Hu Cui'e, presented "Translation of Transcendental Concepts and Categories under the Philosophical Perspective of Integralism: Universality and Particularity, China and the World".


Prof. Zhu Yifan presented a speech on "Some Reflections on Conceptual Translation and History of Translation from an Interdisciplinary Perspective".


There were five sessions in this symposium, in which participants from all over the country read papers and discussed with relevant experts and scholars on the history of conceptual translation, conceptual history, translation studies and other topics. After the discussion in each session, the reviewer of each session made a summary report on the discussion, and the symposium came to a successful end. The symposium promoted interdisciplinary exchanges between scholars in the fields of translation, history and other fields, and provided new thinking and inspiration for the participating teachers and students.
