Translation Studies (TS) is an interdisciplinary subject that encompasses languages, linguistics, stylistics, cultural studies, philosophy and other related theories. The functional approaches, namely, the German school functionalist approach and the discourse analysis approach informed by Functional Linguistics, have become popular among translation researchers in the past two decades. This talk will give an overview of the functional theories and illustrate some of them with translations of public notices and news titles. It is hoped this talk will invite discussion on translation research from functional perspectives and attract more interests in applying relevant theories to translation research.
