On the evening of June 2nd, the third lecture of “ CSSCI (Chinese Social Sciences Citation Index) Paper Writing and Publishing Workshop" of the graduate academic training camp of the School of Foreign Languages of Shanghai Jiao Tong University was successfully held in the cloud. Professor Du Lanlan, Associate Professor Wu You and Li Yafei, a Ph.D.graduate of class 2021 delivered the lecture. The event was hosted by Wei Dingwen, a Ph.D. student of Graduate Class of 2018 and nearly 100 teachers and students listened online.

Professor Du Lanlan focused on and conducted a detailed analysis of several common problems in thesis writing, such as weak awareness of problems, poor writing skills, imbalanced article structure, etc., and proposed corresponding improvement methods. At the same time, she took some typical journals and model essays as examples to analyze the styles and preferences of  journals of foreign literature, and helped sort out topic selection ideas and research perspectives. With a cutting-edge research awareness, Professor Du encouraged everyone to read more, think tirelessly, cultivate interdisciplinary awareness, improve scientific and technological literacy, and made a pertinent evaluation of some current research trends. The whole exchange was analytic, targeted and enlightening.

Associate Professor Wu You shared her exploratory process of writing and publishing papers in her early academic career, and suggested that everyone attend more conferences, think more, communicate with peers more , and broaden horizons. One should take both professional and comprehensive journals into account, be sensitive to topic selection, and take a rational attitude towards complex review comments and rejection. She pointed out that contributors should keep close track of the progress of their manuscripts, and take the initiative to communicate to avoid unnecessary waiting when receiving no feedback from the editorial department. Mr. Wu's explanation was pertinent and her personal experiences helped everyone to peek into the mystery of the journal publishing, encouraging everyone to try and maintain confidence.

Dr. Li Yafei shared some common pitfalls and solutions at the three stages of paper preparation, writing and publishing. He pointed out that in the preparation stage, doctoral students should determine the research direction as soon as possible, balance academic idealism and realistic time and energy, and have long-term planning for topic selection. When writing, one should dare to put forward one’s own opinions and then prove it clearly. One must also cultivate the awareness of producing knowledge rather than accumulating knowledge, so as to promote reading by writing. Finally, one should talk more with one’s supervisor about submission experience, acquaint oneself with the journal preferences, write more and submit more, take review comments seriously, and take a grateful attitude.
During the question and answer session, the teachers further answered the questions from the students. Regarding the topic selection of papers on literature, Mr. Du believed that the writing perspective was as important as the subject of one’s research, and the appropriate cutting point should be chosen in accordance with the preferences of the journals. The exchange meeting was rich in content and the audience responded enthusiastically. With their rich scientific research experience and profound knowledge, the three speakers drew a perfect ending for the series of lectures in the academic training camp of the School of Foreign Languages.
