Construction of Literary World and Dissemination of Ethical Values in Foreign Literature——2021 Foreign Literature Studies Symposium Successfully Held

From December 18 to 19, 2021, Construction of Literary World and Dissemination of Ethical Values in Foreign Literature——2021 Foreign Literature Studies Symposium was successfully held. The symposium was organized by the School of Foreign Languages of Shanghai Jiao Tong University and the editorial board of Frontiers of Foreign Literature Studies, co-organized by the Shanghai Foreign Literature Association and the editorial board of Contemporary Foreign Language Studies, and hosted by the Center for Interdisciplinary Narrative Studies of the School of Foreign Languages of Shanghai Jiao Tong University and the editorial board of Frontiers of Narrative Studies. The symposium revolved around the important topic of "world-making", aiming at examining the ways of constructing literary worlds and ethical values, exploring the frontier topics related to foreign literature research, and actively building a Chinese academic discourse system in the new era. The conference was conducted in an online and offline manner, attracting nearly 300 experts and scholars from more than 180 universities across China, with an online conference room audience of nearly 1,000.

 

 

The opening ceremony was presided over by Shang Biwu, professor of Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Li Weiping, president of the Shanghai Foreign Literature Association, Su Hui, editor-in-chief of Foreign Literature Studies, and Chang Hui, executive associate dean of the School of Foreign Languages at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, delivered opening speeches. On behalf of the Shanghai Foreign Literature Association, Li Weiping expressed his warm congratulations on the successful convening of the conference. He expressed that the topic of literary world construction was very meaningful and suggested that an academic system with Chinese characteristics and Chinese wisdom should be established. On behalf of the editorial board of Foreign Literature Studies, Su Hui expressed his sincere thanks to the experts and scholars for taking the time to attend the conference and suggested that the topic of literary world construction should be approached from multiple perspectives and concerns, such as combining form and content, and combining literary works with social life. Chang Hui briefly introduced the important development of the School of Foreign Languages of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, expressed his gratitude to all the experts and colleagues for their support, and wished the conference a complete success.

 


The conference was a two-day event with 12 keynote speeches, 24 thematic reports and 15 sub-forums.

Prof. Nie Zhenzhao from Zhejiang University, Prof. Jiang Chengyong from Zhejiang University of Technology and Industry, Prof. Liu Jianjun from Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Prof. Wu Di from Zhejiang University, Prof. Li Weiping from Shanghai International Studies University, Prof. Liu Hongtao from Beijing Normal University, Prof. Wang Ning from Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Prof. Fu Xiuyan from Jiangxi Normal University, Prof. Su Hui from Huazhong Normal University, Prof. Zeng Yanbing from Renmin University of China, Prof. Shang Biwu from Shanghai Jiaotong University, Prof. Wang Lixin from Nankai University, delivered keynote speeches at the conference.

 

 

Prof. Luo Liangong from Huazhong Normal University, Prof. Wang Songlin from Ningbo University, Prof. Wang Zhuo from Shandong Normal University, and Prof. Yang Jian from Huazhong Normal University  presided over the conference and made wonderful comments.

 

 

The topics of the thematic reports were (1) "Ideas and Propositions of Literary Theory", (2) "The Critical Orientation of Novel Narrative", (3) "Literary Ethics Criticism", (4) "Exchange and Mutual Appreciation of Chinese and Foreign Literature", (5) "Ideology in Literature", and (6) "Modern Interpretation of Literary Classics".

In the 15 sub-forums, more than 200 scholars met in the clouds and made wonderful speeches on topics such as "The Reception and Dissemination of World Literary Classics", "Narrative Patterns and Contemporary Values of Literary Classics", "Literary Ethics Criticism and Interdisciplinary Research", and actively interacted and exchanged ideas.

The closing ceremony was chaired by Prof. Liu Ruoying of Huazhong Normal University. Prof. Yang Mingming, Associate Editor-in-Chief of Contemporary Foreign Language Studies, delivered the closing speech. Professor Yang expressed her sincere thanks to all the experts and scholars and said that this symposium was very fruitful and important for promoting the development of foreign literature research.

The symposium lasted for two days when the scholars discussed in depth about the construction of literary world. Their broad vision and diversified perspectives fully demonstrated the cutting-edge progress in the field of foreign literature research, and actively promoted the construction of an academic community with a shared future and Chinese academic discourse system. Construction of Literary World and Dissemination of Ethical Values in Foreign Literature——2021 Foreign Literature Studies Symposium was a great success.
