School of Foreign Languages Successfully Hosts the Third International Young Scholars Forum

The 3rd International Young Scholars Form, hosted by the School of Foreign Languages (SFL) of Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU), was successfully held on November 20, 2021. More than 20 scholars from Oxford University, University of Chicago, University of London, University of Warwick, University of Southern California, Peking University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University and other famous universities at home and abroad participated in the forum to discuss and communicate deeply on the frontier issues in the field of foreign languages and literature.

 

The opening ceremony of the forum was hosted by Shang Biwu, a tenured professor of SJTU. Chang Hui, Executive Vice Dean of SFL of SJTU, delivered an opening speech and introduced SFL by briefly focusing on its development history, its overview, its organizational structure, its policy of talent training and its achievements in the past five years. Finally, he expressed sincere thanks to all the experts and scholars for their support, warmly welcomed the outstanding young scholars from home and abroad to join SFL of SJTU, and wished the forum a complete success.

 

 

With the theme of “Frontier Topics and Reflections on Foreign Language Literature Research”, Liu Jianjun, Distinguished Professor of SJTU, elaborated on the new connotation of the literary research system in the new era and emphasized on the outstanding advantages of SFL: the enterprising team atmosphere and advanced and sharp-eyed research concepts.

 

 

With the theme of “Syntax and Semantic Interface Problems in Second Language Acquisition-----Taking Chinese Second Language Intransitive Verbs as An Example”, Professor Yuan Bo-ping, Distinguished Professor of SJTU, pointed out that in the research on language mechanisms in the brains of second language learners there were still many gaps. He invited young scholars to participate in the discussion and build academic dialogues together.

 

 

In the four sub-forums in the afternoon, more than 20 outstanding young scholars gave academic presentations on their respective research fields, sharing their academic experiences and discussing academic frontiers. Hu Hai, Lai Xinqi, Tang Yili and Zou Li, the outstanding young teachers of SFL, hosted the sub-forums and delivered speeches, actively interacting with the young scholars.

 

 

 

The forum provided a valuable opportunity for young scholars from home and abroad for academic exchanges and helped enliven the academic atmosphere in the field of foreign languages and literature. Participating young scholars had in-depth exchanges and discussions, produced thought sparks, benefited from academic inspiration and expanded academic vision, making this forum a great success.
