On the afternoon of July 13, the summer social practice group from the School of Foreign Languages(SFL) of Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) visited China Daily Shanghai Bureau to carry out career guidance practice. The practice group is led by Ding Jian, Secretary of the CPC SFL Commmittee, Tao Qing, Associate Dean of SFL, and Zhu Yifan, Vice Secretary of the CPC SFL Committee. Cao Hui, Associate Professor of the Department of French and Russian, Huan Changpeng, Associate Professor of Martin Center for Appliable Linguistics, Li Xin, Associate Professor of the Department of Translation, Liu Yan, director of SFL’s Student Affairs Office, and 13 undergraduate and graduate students participated in the practice.

At the beginning of the exchange, Lin Shujuan, senior editor of China Daily Shanghai Bureau, gave a welcome speech on behalf of the newspaper. She said that she hoped to take this opportunity to learn and discuss with SJTU students and faculty on topics such as "telling Chinese stories" and "spreading Chinese culture". Afterwards, He Wei, a senior reporter of the newspaper, shared with the audience how traditional media can keep up with the changes of the times by improving material editing, enriching the forms of communication and enhancing its effectiveness.

Tao Qing introduced SFL’s mechanism for and results of training translation talents specializing in foreign-oriented publicity. Zhu Yifan gave a brief introduction to the newly-established integrated media studio and training base, expecting to cooperate and innovate with China Daily and other mainstream media to create a series of university-enterprise co-construction platforms to further broaden education resources and channels.

Lin Shujuan spoke highly of SFL’s mechanism for training translation talents. Combining her 20 years of working experience, Lin Shujuan explained "how to tell Chinese stories well" to teachers and students from three aspects.

Focusing on Australian media and French media respectively, Huan Changpeng and Cao Hui gave research reports, in which they carried out an in-depth analysis of the shaping and dissemination of China's image in foreign media, the issues concerned, attitudes and positions, and the reasons behind from an academic perspective. During the interactive session, the experts answered various questions patiently and encouraged students to clarify their interests as soon as possible, to study deeply and to strive for excellence.

At the end of the event, Ding Jian summarized the event with the key words of "thanks", "experience" and "expectation". At last, Ding Jian, on behalf of SFL, awarded a bronze medal to China Daily Shanghai Bureau as a social practice base, looking forward to further exchanges and cooperation.

After the practice, students gain a more close-up and profound understanding of journalism industry, future career planning, and the responsibility and mission to help build China's image. SFL students will carry out General Secretary Xi Jinping's request, bear in mind the responsibility of “Connect China and foreign countries, Build a bridge of understanding between China and the rest of the world” and make use of their knowledge to do their part in better presenting a true, multi--dimensional and panoramic view of China.
