The First National Consciousness and Ideological and Political Construction of Foreign Language Courses Seminar Held in SJTU

In order to deeply implement Xi Jinping’s important statement on education and also the spirit of the National Education Conference, the first National Consciousness and Ideological and Political Construction of Foreign Language Courses Seminar was held in Minhang Campus of Shanghai Jiao Tong University(SJTU) on June 5th, 2021. The seminar was hosted by School of Foreign LanguagesSFL) of SJTU, and co-organized by the Academic Affairs Office, Center for Teaching and Learning Development, Publicity Department, Students Affairs Steering Committee and Graduate School of SJTU.

 

Ding Kuiling, Executive Vice President of SJTU and Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences attended the opening ceremony and delivered a speech. Professor Jiang Feng, Shanghai International Studies University’s Council Chair, Professor Shi Jian of Sichuan University, Professor Xu Jinfen of Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Professor Chen Jianlin of Shanghai International Studies University, Professor Zhang Li of SJTU, and other university leaders and renowned experts and scholars, and Ding Jian, Secretary of the CPC SFL Committee of SJTU, Chang Hui, Executive Vice Dean of SFL of SJTU, representatives of teachers and students of SFL, and more than 90,000 listeners online attended the conference. The opening ceremony was hosted by Chang Hui.

 

Ding Kuiling expressed his sincere congratulations on the opening of the meeting and a warm welcome to all the experts and scholars. He pointed out that curriculum ideology and politics, as one of the most effective tools to implement the fundamental task of "cultivating virtue in people" and uniting cultural identity, should not only be "ubiquitous" but also "infiltrating" in its promotion.

 

Ding Jian said that teachers of SFL attached great importance to improving students' ideological and moral cultivation and comprehensive quality in daily teaching, and had achieved some preliminary results by carrying out a series of work centering on curriculum ideology and politics. It was believed that this conference will greatly contribute to its further development in China. At the same time, it will be a valuable opportunity for SJTU to explore its in-depth construction in comprehensive universities.

 

Six panel forums were held at the conference,with 37 speakers sharing their research results and actively interacting and communicating with participants. The experts and scholars conducted thorough academic exchanges on topics such as strengthening the national consciousness in foreign language education policy and practices, promoting the ideological and political construction of its curriculum, including theoretical basis and practical paths, as well as content resources.

 

Chang Hui delivered a speech at the closing ceremony, stressing that the ideological and political construction of foreign language courses was an important part of foreign language education in the new era. SJTU sincerely looked forward to working with all the participants to contribute more to its construction in China.

 

Theme reports and special dialogues were organized by Professors Zhu Yifan, Yang Feng, Peng Qinglong, Tao Qing, Huan Changpeng, Zhang Xuezhen, Zhang Li as moderators respectively.  Parallel forums were chaired by Zhang Li, Jin Wenfeng, Du Yan, Qiu Kuanyong, Wang Shaoyang, Lin Yuzhen and other teachers.

 

Experts called for the strengthening of national awareness in foreign language education policies and foreign language teaching practices, so as to achieve the unity of imparting professional knowledge and reaching educational goals. By breaking the thinking shackles of the old disciplines, and placing cultivation in the first place in curriculum teaching, education’s fundamental task of “cultivating virtue in people” can be realized.
