On March 3 and 4, the 2nd Shanghai-Nanjing Intervarsity English Debate Competition and the 2nd "Changjiang Cup" English Debate Competition was held in the Baoshan Campus of Shanghai University. 60 teams from more than 20 universities in Shanghai, Nanjing and Anhui competed fiercely in the five rounds of round-robin and the semi-finals. Under the instruction and guidance of Dai Rongrong, lecturer from the Department of Translation in SFL, the contestants Wu Jingjing (Antai College of Economics and Management) and Zhu Cheng (School of Medicine) won the runner-up and best debater award. Li Yini and Gu Shiyi from SFL won the third prize.
This contest adopted the competition system of “World Universities Debating Championship”, which is currently a recognized competition form of English debating contests. This competition lasted for two days. In the five rounds of round-robin debating in education, law, and politics, the candidates’ knowledge and communication skills were comprehensively tested. After five rounds of round-robin debating, Wu Jingjing and Zhu Cheng were able to stand out and enter the final contest. With outstanding performance, the two candidates won runner-up and best debater award in the final round of the competition.

The contest included all sorts of activities that allowed participants to make the most of their experience in the English debates. By discussing intriguing and meaningful topics with teachers both before and during the competition, Wu Jingjing felt that the contest offered her a valuable opportunity to broaden her own global vision and allowed her to meet many other talented debaters and to experience the atmosphere of a high-level contest. Li Zhen’ni pointed out that Dai Rongrong trained them with patience, cultivating their abilities on independent thinking, language expression, cooperation and coordination, which was the key of their teamwork and great performance.
The 2nd Shanghai-Nanjing Intervarsity English Debate Competition and the 2nd “Changjiang Cup” English Debate Competition was hosted by Shanghai University with the purpose of “exchanging ideas with fellow debaters”. It provides participants with a way to learn about the British parliamentary system, to improve their competing abilities and to develop their critical-thinking skills in order to establish an open and fair platform for language talents in Chinese colleges to compete and communicate with each other.
