Science of Language and Communication Disorders

Program Objectives

Under the background of the new liberal arts development strategy of the Ministry of Education, the School of Foreign Languages at Shanghai Jiao Tong University actively responds to and serves the national strategies of "Healthy China" and "Actively Responding to Aging", aiming to alleviate the burden on the country, society, families, and individuals. Leveraging its interdisciplinary strengths, it relies on the first-class discipline of foreign languages and literature and the National Center for Language and Health to vigorously develop the "Science of Language and Communication Disorders" micro program.

This program is dedicated to cultivating research talents and speech therapists in the field of language and health who possess a solid foundation in interdisciplinary knowledge such as language science, cognitive science, psychological science, and rehabilitation medicine, and who have an international perspective, a sense of social responsibility, and innovative practical abilities.

Course Syllabus

Core Compulsory Course: Linguistic Theory

This course aims to enable students to gain an in-depth understanding of the nature and structure of human language. It covers the sound system, lexical structure, syntactic rules, meaning expression and language use, with an emphasis on integrating theory with practice. Students are encouraged to participate in the collection and analysis of linguistic data to enhance their ability to understand and apply linguistic theories.

Core Compulsory Course: Auditory Science

This course is designed to explore the auditory system and its functions in depth. Core knowledge points include the biophysics of hearing, diagnosis of hearing loss, treatment methods for hearing disorders, and hearing rehabilitation technologies. The course emphasizes the integration of theory and practice, fostering students’ professional skills in hearing assessment, diagnosis and rehabilitation.

Core Compulsory Course: Neurolinguistics

This course seeks to explore the relationship between language processing and brain functions. Core knowledge points cover the linguistic functions of the brain, neurobiological foundations, neural mechanisms of language disorders, and the latest research findings in cognitive neuroscience. With a focus on integrating theory and practice, the course cultivates students’ research capabilities at the intersection of linguistics and neuroscience.

Advanced Compulsory Course: Patholinguistics

This course focuses on the identification, assessment and treatment of language disorders. Core knowledge points include the classification and causes of language disorders, assessment tools and techniques, as well as psychosocial support for patients and their families. It aims to develop students’ clinical thinking and practical skills to provide effective language therapy services.

Advanced Compulsory Course: Speech Disorders Rehabilitation Theory

This course centers on the assessment and rehabilitation methods of speech disorders. Core knowledge points cover the causes, characteristics and influencing factors of speech disorders, rehabilitation theories and methods, as well as case studies and practical applications. The course is designed to cultivate students’ professional competence in the diagnosis, assessment and rehabilitation of speech disorders, enabling them to deliver effective clinical services.

Practical Compulsory Course: Speech Disorders Rehabilitation Practice

The objective of this course is to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world scenarios and develop students’ practical operational skills. Core knowledge points include the use of specific assessment tools, design of treatment plans, case management, as well as professional ethics and patient communication skills. The course emphasizes the accumulation of practical experience, laying a solid foundation for students’ future clinical work.

Faculty Team

The minor program of Science of Language and Communication Disorders boasts a strong and interdisciplinary faculty team. Led by the research team from the National Research Center for Language and Health of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, the faculty is highly authoritative and influential. Meanwhile, renowned experts in the field of language and communication disorder treatment from medical institutions such as Shanghai Mental Health Center, Shanghai Sunshine Rehabilitation Center, Shanghai Guangming Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Sino-Japanese Friendship Hospital in Beijing are invited to teach and provide opportunities for clinical internships and laboratory operations.

Chang Hui

Chang Hui is a tenured professor and doctoral supervisor at the School of Foreign Languages, Shanghai Jiao Tong University. President of the Educational Linguistics Professional Committee of the China Association for Comparative Studies of English and Chinese, President of the Second Language Processing Professional Committee of the China Association for Comparative Studies of Chinese and Foreign Languages and Cultures, Vice President of the Language Cognition and Intelligence Development Professional Committee of the China Society for Modernization of Chinese Language and Literature, Standing Director of the Second Language Acquisition Research Professional Committee of the China Association for Comparative Studies of English and Chinese, Journal of Second Co-executive editor of Language Studies, Editorial Board member of Foreign Language Teaching and Research, Contemporary Foreign Language Studies and International Journal of Chinese Language Teaching. Executive Director of the National Language Commission Research Base "National Language and Health Research Center", one of the first batch of national virtual teaching and research rooms of the Ministry of Education, Shanghai Municipal Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center, National First-Class Major Construction Point, National first-class Course Leader, winner of the First prize of Shanghai Teaching Achievement Award, and chief editor of multiple textbooks. Mainly engaged in research on language acquisition and processing, foreign language teaching and testing, as well as aphasia language. So far, more than 50 academic papers have been published in core linguistics journals of SSCI and CSSCI both at home and abroad. Three monographs have been published. The National Social Science Foundation of China's Youth Project and Key Project, the Ministry of Education's Humanities and Social Sciences Foundation of China's Youth Project, and the Shanghai Undergraduate Key Teaching Reform Project have been completed as the principal investigator. Currently, I am in charge of the major bidding project of the National Social Science Foundation of China, titled "Innovative Research on Second Language Acquisition Theory Benchmarking International Chinese Language Education".
Yuan Boping

Yuan Boping, Distinguished Professor of Linguistics at the School of Foreign Languages, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Fellow of Churchill College, University of Cambridge, Director of the Academic Committee of the National Language and Health Research Center of China, Chief Editor of the international Journal Journal of Second Language Studies (John Benjamins) At the same time, he/she serves as an editorial board member of several domestic and international academic journals This includes Second Language Research, International Review of Applied Linguistics, and Journal of Chinese Linguistics. Lingua has authored books such as "Foreign Language Teaching and Research", "Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages in the World", "Modern Foreign Languages", etc. He also serves as the executive director of the World Association for Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages and the vice chairman of the Language Theory and Language Education Research Branch of the World Association for Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages. Research interests include second and multilingual acquisition within the framework of theoretical linguistics and bilingualism and human health. More than eighty papers have been published in international mainstream academic journals and important academic journals in China. Compile two English-Chinese and Chinese-English dictionaries (Oxford University Press). The monograph "Interlanguage Grammars of Mandarin Chinese" is about to be published (Cambridge University Press).
Ding Hongwei

Ding Hongwei is a tenured professor and doctoral supervisor at the School of Foreign Languages, Shanghai Jiao Tong University. He holds a Doctor of Linguistics degree and the qualification of Professor of Engineering from Germany. Served as the chief expert of the National Social Science Major Project "Corpus Construction for People with Mental Disorders and Language Research for Brain Science and Artificial Intelligence", an Officer of the Council of the International Association of Speech Prosody, and the deputy director of the Phonetics Branch of the Chinese Linguistics Society. Served as the chief editor of two series of books published by Springer and a reviewer for SCI/SSCI journals, and published over a hundred international papers. During the more than ten years of conducting research on speech technology at the German Institute of Electronics and Information Technology, I have led or participated in over ten vertical projects in Germany or the European Union as well as horizontal projects with renowned international companies, including the construction of multilingual speech synthesis systems and the development of computer-aided speech learning systems. After returning to China, I have mainly been engaged in the research of second language speech acquisition. In recent years, I have focused on the cognitive neuroscience exploration of speech prosody in people with hearing and mental disorders, and have continued to collaborate with internationally renowned companies to develop technical products in the fields of speech intelligence and speech pathology.
Xi Yanling

Xi Yanling is the director, professor, chief therapist and postgraduate supervisor of the Rehabilitation Department of Guangming Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Pudong New Area, Shanghai. She is also an expert reviewer for the National Natural Science Foundation of China and an "Outstanding Rehabilitation Therapist" of the Chinese Association of Rehabilitation Medicine. Served as the deputy group leader of the Speech and Language Rehabilitation Group of the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Branch of the Chinese Medical Association, a standing committee member of the Speech Rehabilitation Committee of the Chinese Rehabilitation Medical Association, and the vice chairperson of the Speech Rehabilitation Committee of the Shanghai Rehabilitation Medical Association. The research direction is brain language function and aphasia studies. He has presided over two projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China and six provincial and ministerial-level projects. He has published over forty papers as the first or corresponding author. As the deputy chief editor, I have published four planned textbooks for the 13th Five-Year Plan and the 14th Five-Year Plan. As the chief editor, I have published one compilation. As the deputy chief editor, I have published two compilations. Obtained two national new utility model patents; Won the second prize of Science and Technology Progress of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region and the second prize of Science and Technology Progress of Shihezi City.
