The
Department of Japanese (founded in 1999) offers a Bachelor of Arts
programme. The period of time for completion is four years. It currently
comprises 15 staff members and one guest lecturer from Japan, among
whom two are full professors, seven are associate professors and
three are lecturers. Eleven of these staff members hold MA or PhD
degrees. Their major research domains include Japanese linguistics,
comparative studies of Chinese and Japanese linguistics, Japanese
literature, comparative studies of Chinese and Japanese literature,
Japanese Culture, comparative studies of Chinese and Japanese culture,
and Japanese language education.
The Bachelor of Arts (Japanese Language) programme aims to cultivate
composite-type professionals who have a high Japanese proficiency
and an adequate knowledge of Japanese culture and economy, together
with a good command of English and computer skills and with strong
adaptive abilities to meet the social needs. Graduates from the
Department are advanced professionals of Japanese who can undertake
administrative, interpreting and translating jobs at foreign-funded
enterprises, cultural and educational institutions, news media and
publishing houses.
Candidates of this programme have to pass the Band One of the
Japanese Language Proficiency Test and the Band Six of the College
English Test. They have to become acquainted with some research
methods, equipped with the ability to do independent research and
well qualified to pursue further studies at graduate schools of
Chinese and overseas universities.
Apart from conducting the BA programme in Japanese Language, the
Department offers Japanese language courses for undergraduate and
graduate students of all the colleges and department of this university.
The BA programme in Japanese Language is also available to students
of the other colleges and departments.
The Department of Japanese has wide contacts with universities
of Japan.
The Reference Room of the Department is equipped with a rich collection
of Japanese books, journals and audio-visual publications available
to both staff and students.
